About The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in 1934 and is the nation’s most visited national park. This picturesque park spans 522,419 acres; about 95 percent of it is forested. Sixteen of the mountains in the range are higher than 6,000 feet offering incredible views from every summit. Within the park, which sits on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, there are more than 800 miles of backcountry trails and more than 2,100 miles of streams to explore.

Gatlinburg is located at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In fact, the town is surrounded by the park on three sides. You can enter the park from three different locations in downtown Gatlinburg, making this attraction a must during your visit. The list of things to do in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is nearly endless, but here are three activities that should be on your list!

Hiking – Grab the family and gear up for a 2.6-mile round-trip hike to beautiful Laurel Falls. This trail was formerly used by fire crews. The path is paved, but it is a little rough and steep in places, so just be sure to pay attention as you’re walking through the lush forest. Your reward for the moderate hike is a view of the beautiful 80-foot falls. Scenic Motor Nature Drive – If a relaxing ride through the mountains is more your speed, take the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a 5.5-mileone-way loop. See the Roaring Fork Smoky Mountains streams, old-growth forest, and historic buildings, such as log cabins, grist mills and more!

Fishing – Those who love to fish will enjoy a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fish for trout and smallmouth bass from sunrise to sunset in one of more than 2,100 miles of streams in the park. Don’t forget to get your fishing license!

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad – All aboard! Located just minutes from the park, enjoy a scenic rail excursion that takes you all the way through the beautiful countryside.
