    HIKING THE GREAT SMOKIES

We have hiked in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for over 10 years now once or twice each year.. It is always exciting to return to the area knowing there is always a new, or old favorite trail to hike. We have logged over 200 miles of hiking the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Around each bend, across each creek, old growth forest or historic cabin to visit, there is nothing like the Great Smoky Mountains. We try to start each hike with a visit to the Sugerlands visitor center, our favorite place to brouse and shop while visiting the Smoky Mountains. There are so many items pertaining to the past and present history of the smokies. We have bought honey, blackberry jam, books, maps, cd's, shirts, jackets and souveniors for us, our kids and grandkids.

There are so many great hikes to take ones mind becomes overwelmed at which one to travel on next. Our first real hike was to Abrams Falls probable in 1996. We had hiked (walked) several years before but I couldn't convince my wife to do so, besides our kids were small. One such walk! was to the top of Clingsman Dome probable in the 1970's. Of this I remember the trail was competley covered by a canopy of trees throughout the entire walk. I wish it were still the same. Later on she became more health wise and now loves to hike as I do.

Hopefully we will be able to hike after retirement and many years to come.Smile
